7-inch vinyl launch
Sunday, 29 May 2011 17:14
The Holy Sea are very pleased to announce the launch of their first vinyl release: the 7- inch vinyl AA-single 'The Ten Rules/St Thomas Sound'.The release follows on from the critical acclaim for their 2010 album 'Ghosts of the Horizon', which was nominated for Album of the Year in the 2010 Rolling Stone Magazine Awards.
The limited edition, numbered single features two Holy Sea favourites. Co-written by Henry F. Skerritt and Daniel Hoey, ‘The Ten Rules’ relates the storied, afflicted life of Thomas Wentworth ‘Tom’ Wills, the brilliantly flawed codifier of Australian Rules football.
The song is simultaneously mournful and majestic in tone, and as Wills’ deranged, alcoholic suicide seems about to drift into silence, singers Henry F. Skerritt and Emma Frichot break into a series of oppositions:
‘There’s one rule for laughing, and one rule to cry; there’s one rule for drinking, and one rule to fight; there’s one rule for heartache, and one rule for hope...’,
On side B, Emma Frichot takes lead vocals for the Tex-Mex influenced 'St Thomas Sound'. Inspired by Manning Clarke and Henrik Ibsen and featuring a blistering trumpet solo by Paul Coyle, it is a poetic re-imagining of a convicts first impressions, being thrown into contact with an alien Antipodean landscape.
Make sure you join THE HOLY SEA for a very special evening, as they launch 'Ten Rules/St Thomas Sound' with special guests Buried Horses and the Andrew Higgs Band! Doors open 8pm, entry is $12.
...I have a feeling that in the long run, the voices that will constitute our artistic legacy will belong to the likes of Skerritt and The Holy Sea. - MESS AND NOISE
“...one of the most intelligent, artistically innovative and foot-stompin’ bands in this country ..the Holy Sea are an epic band, in all senses of the word” - INPRESS MAGAZINE
I think what we are looking at here are the makings of legend that prompt me to declare The Holy Sea as ‘Band of the Decade’. – QUIET POP ZINE
a cerebral and richly crafted album moving fluidly from public to private storytelling and from folk-rock to alt-country. - SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
